You can also read these three critical custody mistakes to avoid:

1. Damaging Your Child’s Relationship With The Other Parent

Alienating your child from the other parent is dangerous to the child, and it won’t look good to the judge.

It may not seem like a problem to complain about the other parent’s faults in front of your child or make a bitter face every time his or her name is mentioned. However, keep in mind that your child loves both of you, and he or she desperately wants to believe that the other parent loves him or her, too. Stating that “Daddy doesn’t care about us anymore” or “Your mom is worthless” can cause a wide array of long-lasting problems for your child, from trust issues to behavioral problems.

2. Failing To Stay Involved With Your Child

Make parenting time a priority, and spend as much time with your child as you can. In addition to exercising parenting time, keep yourself informed about your child’s progress in school and other important issues. The school may not automatically send you copies of report cards, for instance, but you may be able to proactively contact the school and request them.

3. Taking Your Child Away Without Permission

Even if the other parent is abusive or neglectful, you need to obtain the court’s permission to relocate with your children. Simply packing them up and disappearing can spark serious accusations of child abduction or parental kidnapping. Before you make any move, consult an attorney.
